Skagway, Alaska

August 1, 2008

We boondocked (park anywhere, put up the curtains and go to sleep) on a Skagway city street last night and awoke at about 7 am. After cleaning up we went to Skagway’s famous White Pass and Yukon [narrow-gauged] Railroad ticket office hoping for 2 tickets for the 8:45 am train. Jackpot and better yet, there were only about 30 people for the 2 cars allocated to us “non-cruise ship types”. Plenty of seats and not crowded! It was a great 3 hour trip and efficiently organized. Beautiful scenery and a great gold rush history. I love trains and have “done” the Durango to Silverton, Colorado narrow-gauge train several times and thought there was no way the WPYR would beat it. Well, after thinking about it, we have a draw. Both are great fun.

After the train we decided to head into the interior to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada to start our Alaskan Highway trek. What a beautiful drive from Skagway to Whitehorse. Saw 2 bears along the way. BTW, filled up the tank with 24 gallons a fuel for $129! Ouch!

We finally had a sunny day and Whitehorse is a beautiful town of about 30,000 residents. We stopped at the Baked CafĂ© for free WiFi and some hot tea. Later, after touring downtown and the Yukon River, we were itching for some Mexican food and had dinner at the Sanchez Mexican Restaurant. The food was delicious but way over-priced. Pat and I split one 2 enchilada meal and a Corona for $30!!! They don’t even give you free chips and salsa before the meal. That was another $8 for a small order. Pallleeze! Mexican is the cheapest food you can serve. They have to be making a fortune because the place was packed.

Tonight we are camping at the Robert Service campground just outside of Whitehorse. Our neighbors are two nice Swiss guys who Pat guessed were Russian from their accents. These guys are on a 4-month vacation which isn’t unusual in their country. Pat told them that in the USA a 4-month vacation would mean you were fired.

Off to bed around 9 pm, the campground was crowded but very quiet.

must be quite the train ride to be a draw with the silverton/durango ride.
