Departing Saltillo was a bit easier than driving the downtown streets. We easily found Mex Hwy 54 and took it 217 miles south. There is a lot of construction and the road goes from 4 to 2 lanes intermittently, lots of construction work, and fast moving trucks on a mission. In some areas you have to be on your toes.
I took a nap while Bruce drove comfortably 20mph over the speed limit as the pressing traffic from our backside kept us from dragging our behind, which we normally do.
This was our first “libre” highway to take as it is recommended to use only toll roads but after talking with our previous hotel host we felt confident, and rightfully so. Really no different than driving in Texas, just no shoulders or vista pullouts. It seems the construction is to widen the road. We noticed a lot of crosses on the side of the road, one site had about nine....reminders of the dangers of driving. The number of crosses along this route rivaled Hwy 191 in Montana....we counted more than 30 on that ~80 mile stretch.
Photo right: More Joshua trees along this route.
We made it to Zacatecas and with a bit more finesse Bruce squeezed the van into the downtown area to find our hotel smack dab in el centro.

Hi! We have driven in Mexico many times over the years but it has been about 5 years since our last trip. Planning on going to Zacatecas from Austin Texas in one day during christmas break. How long did it take you from Satillo? Also were there many pemex places on the way. On the Quotas there are losts of stops at each toll with clean bathrooms and petrol. Just wondering about the Libre? Any great finds, restuarants etc... in Zacatecas? We have driven to Oaxaca and San Miguel De Allende, Michaocan, and a real treat Xitlila on eastern side of Sierra Madres. Crazy brit who built surreal concrete sculptures in the jungle. You can stay at his houses that is B and B now. Thanks for any tips on road to Zacatecas and city itself
Hola! We recall it took about 4 hours from Saltillo. The libre road was fine, some construction but did not slow us down. There are Pemex stations w/sanitarios (some cost 5-8 pesos) along the way. Download or buy good updated maps. Garmin GPS w/Mexico maps was very helpful. Getting into the centro, we had trouble with the signage so pay attention. We highly recommend Hotel Reyna Soledad, for 590 pesos it's a great deal, quiet, attentive, perfect location. Also, take the Eden Mine tour if you have time and visit La Bufa and Iglesia Fatima. Zacatecas is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico we've visited. If you have any money burning a hole in your pocket, consider staying at Quinta Real hotel, its built around a bullring....otherwise, do visit it.
