In the Hill Country resides a pleasant retreat
Endless views, dry grass and forests of mesquite
The sunrise bright and air so clean
The temperature warm till sunset pristine
This land is for hunters of Earth’s exotic creatures
Also for watchers who enjoy taking pictures
Antelope, deer, turkey and snakes
Roam with fear as they soon know their fate
Inside the cabin walls they’re sturdily hung
To refresh the owners memory of how they were won
Rugs of hide and no animal part wasted
A freezer of steaks soon to be tasted
Although not hunters we’re here to see
The beauty of the animals on this retreat
Quietly they roam off in the distance
Prancing and running and fear our existence
Silently sitting, taking it all in
Listening to silence borne on the wind
Warm breeze, bright sun and the rustle of leaves
As dew drips from the tin roof’s eaves
Our diverse existence brings us smiles
Harried in Dallas then no one for miles
Porch rocking chairs and sunset walks
Staring at the night sky, while no one talks
We came to stay two nights but stayed a week
Now it’s time to move on to find what we seek
The land is open, we’ve enjoyed this space
The Raphael Ranch is truly one sweet place.
