The Raphael Ranch - Kerr County Texas

September 28th 2008

Our friends Kathy and Kenny offered us their cabin retreat on 120 acres in the Texas Hill Country. For those of you that have never visited Texas this is the most beautiful and best part of this humongous state. We decided to take them up on it last minute and we’re glad we did. Its 20 miles from the nearest town on a wildlife hunting reserve (the Y.O. Ranch has antelope, Aoudad sheep, other exotics and a variety of deer) with “over 10,000 animals” and “55 different species”. “The management of this natural habitat allows hunters to hunt year-round.”

Raphael Ranch Fauna: Whitetail Deer…..the way we like to view them.

We are not hunters…we’d rather give them a name. But that didn’t stop us from raiding the Raphael freezer for some Kenny-killed game.

The ranch home is perfect! Cozy in authentic organic rustic décor, more than all the necessities, plus DISH network to watch this tumultuous financial time unravel…or be saved.

We’re spending much of our time on the front porch relaxing in the warm Texas climate during the day and at night gaze at the billions and billions of stars. After living in almost perpetual cloud-covered Western Washington for seven years we’re catching up on our viewing of clear Texas skies. Sunrises are brilliant, sunsets are soft and boy is it nice to be warm day-in, day-out. We thought we’d stay a couple of days, but after day one we decided to stay a week.

Limestone exposed: great for fossil hunting. Note clear skies and dry ground!

Raphael Ranch Flora: Prickly Pear Cacti.

The water trough.

There’s beauty in everything, even red fire ants and stickers.

Thanks Kathy and Kenny for making our vacation from our vacation possible!
