Zacatecas, Zacatecas Mexico

October 10, 2008

This old colonial mining town has a strong European feel. We can’t believe we never heard about this city until arriving in Mexico. If more Americans knew about this place it would be another over run Mexican utopia. Zacatecas has excellent hotels, great food, shopping galore, monuments to visit, ease of city walking and several 5-star tours to choose from. Plus, everything is incredibly inexpensive.

Photo left: Mural painted in the 70s depicting the history of this region (only first part of mural shown here). Photos below: street view and plaza in front of the Governors House.

This town was established in the mid 1500s for its mines: rich in gold, silver, iron, zinc and copper. The Spaniards had the local Nahuatl Indians do the mining and sent the goods back to Spain, the silver was used to support the Spanish wars. There are several historical events that took place here as well including a battle won by Pancho Villa. This city is known for their pink stone buildings which are extracted locally, one of the many things that make this city unique. It lays a bit north of central Mexico and is 8050 feet above sea level. The temperature is in the 70s now and gets a bit hot in the summer but not too cold in the winter. Many Mexicans vacation here during the summer and December.

Photos right above and below: Hotel Reyna Soledad. Very authenic Mexican with colonial atmosphere, notice the pink columns. The courtyard has a well (once functioning) as decor, plants and stone walls keep environment cool and aesthetically attractive. The doors and furniture are all solid wood. Cost: 590 pesos/night (~49.00USDs) Free parking and wireless internet, the service was extraordinary.

So far on this trip, this is definitely a place I would consider living for a while. Surprisingly, we saw very few Americans in this town.

There are many restaurants so lots of competition of excellent food. For dinner I had vegetarian enchilada plate, tostadas for Bruce, beer and wine cost 140pesos (~11.66USDs including tip).
